Am I Eligible for Medicare?
Unfortunately, Medicare is not readily available for everyone once they retire; there are certain requirements that you must meet in order to apply. Typically, Medicare is available for younger people with disabilities, those 65 and older, or those with End Stage Renal Disease.
How to Find the Right Coverage
Once you are eligible to receive Medicare insurance, you want to make sure that you get the right coverage to meet your needs. Medicare is broken up into various parts that make up the different types of coverage. For example, Medicare Part A is strictly hospital insurance and covers hospital stays, hospice care, care in a nursing home, and some health care. In its entirety, Medicare insurance is comprised of:
- Part A (hospital insurance)
- Part B (medical insurance)
- Medicare supplement insurance
- Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage plans)
- Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
As you can see, there are a variety of different plans for you to choose from, and you have the option to choose one or multiple plans to get the coverage that you need.
Research the Different Options
If you’re about to turn 65, then you may want to start looking at your options. Unlike the insurance that you may have received from your employer, the various Medicare parts only cover specific services. Therefore, it’s important that you do your research and decide which option will provide you with the most benefits.
As with most insurance plans, Medicare has specific enrollment deadlines that you will need to remember if you decide to invest in Medicare insurance. You will have a seven-month window to enroll in Medicare. The enrollment period begins three months prior to your 65th birthday, includes the month of your birthday, as well as the three months after your birth month. If you fail to enroll during that period, you run the risk of being charged a late enrollment penalty.
